Job description: DescriptionThis position is only open to current City of Oxnard City Corps MembersThe City of Oxnard’s Cultural and Community Services Department – City Corps Program is seeking Student Trainees-Extra Help. The Corps selects young men and women for participation on the basis of motivation for hard work, personal development, and public service, without regard to their prior employment or education background.Under general supervision, performs general City Corps community and public service program duties or hands-on public service work; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; and performs related duties as required.WORK SCHEDULE: These positions work various schedules at various locations throughout the city of Oxnard. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours and weekends as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay.PLEASE NOTE: Extra-Help positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the city’s benefits plan and policies, you will not be eligible for benefits, other than those required by federal or state law, due to the short duration of your employment. You will be provided paid leave in accordance with city policy. Additionally, the city requires enrollment in retirement programs as the city does not participate in social security.In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at will and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end
employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause.Essential FunctionsInclude but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists with providing City Corps program support; may assist with supervising or leading program participants during community and public service projects or activities.
  • Distributes informational flyers to the general public; may assist media staff with program activities.
  • Provides logistics information to program participants and the general public.
  • Assists with general clean-up and set up for activities related to community service or recreation.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and escalates complaints.

Minimum QualificationsThe following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:EDUCATION:

  • The completion of the 7th grade
  • To be within the ages of 14-17.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Employees in this classification must possess or be able to obtain a California state work permit prior to employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing.
  • A current City of Oxnard City Corps member
