If so, the City of Savannah has an exciting opportunity for a transitioning service member to participate in a 15-week internship to learn about the field of water reclamation operations.As a Maintenance Mechanic intern in the Water Reclamation VIBE SkillBridge Internship program you will perform entry level tasks involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment employed in the operation of the water and wastewater treatment plants to include learning how to maintain and repair equipment used in the wastewater treatment process.Under the SkillBridge program you will continue to receive military compensation and military benefits as an active duty member. We recognize that release for SkillBridge is mission dependent, therefore, your unit Commander must authorize participation in the SkillBridge program prior to entering into any agreement with interested industry partners. This is a 15-week internship for the Water & Sewer Maintenance Mechanic VIBE Skillbridge Internship Program provides an entry into learning how to perform a variety of skilled work in the Maintenance of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Facility to include water pump repair, valve repair and general maintenance. Students will learn the necessary skills to eventually become a maintenance mechanic. Students will be working under the mentorship of an experience maintenance mechanic. They will gain skills that will help them excel in an industry that has a need for qualified maintenance mechanics. Students will learn how to: (1) inspects all mechanical equipment; (2) perform weekly preventative maintenance; (3) Perform plant equipment repairs; (4) How to look and listen for any abnormal mechanical actions or sounds; (5) Knowledge of overall maintenance repairs; (6) common metal work projects we perform and equipment used; (7) Advanced training including call out scenarios.Other Requirements: Physical Demands & Work Environment: Most work is performed in a water treatment plant/field setting, with occasional work done in an office environment. PPE will be provided. May be exposed to harsh substances; be exposed to foul odors within acceptable ranges/levels; work in confined spaces; ascend and descend ladders up to 50 feet in height; wear protective apparel including, but not limited to, goggles, face protectors, aprons, fall protection, shoes and a respirator, as required by OSHA standards.Work Schedule: The City’s normal working hours are 7 am to 3:30 pm Monday – Friday, though Water Resources Department has a flexible work schedule dependent upon operational needs. - Interdiction of plant equipment.
Goal of Week 1: To learn where all the equipment is, what it does and how it ties into the wastewater treatment processWeeks 2-5: General MaintenanceDates: TBD
- Learn to perform preventive maintenance.
- Learn how to use senses for abnormal sounds or appearance of equipment.
- Learn how to check and add oil and grease equipment.
- Work alongside Mechanics

- Replace oil and filters on equipment.
- Perform some Pipefitting task.
- Work alongside Mechanics
Goal of weeks 6-10: Learn how to replace oil and filters on some equipment and learn proper way to fit pipe.Week 11: Equipment ReplacementDates: TBD
- Preform a submersible pump swap out on one system.
- Properly adjust a conveyor belt,
- Align a drive belt.
- Work alongside Mechanics
