Department Description:NPI: The Nonprofit Institute (NPI) was founded in 2002 in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego (USD) to provide research, technical consulting, convening, and training to develop transformational community leaders and organizations. Based in one of the oldest leadership schools in the country, NPI is nationally renowned for its programs to: help values-driven leaders connect, learn and advance social good and community; empower nonprofits by activating their greatest assets – their people; and provide the research, evaluation and services these organizations need to make sustainable and lasting impact with the communities they serve.BiGI: The University of San Diego’s Black InGenious Initiative (BiGI) is designed to counterbalance the long-standing education inequities experienced by Black youth in the San Diego region. Additionally, BiGI welcomes non-Black youth from groups with documented experience of disparate and adverse impact on educational opportunity. Participation in BiGI and our related partner programs is extended to students from backgrounds such as socioeconomically disadvantaged, unsheltered, foster youth, transgendered, neurodiverse, undocumented, English language learner, first-gen to college, and/or from racial and ethnographic backgrounds with adverse disproportionate rates of suspensions, chronic absenteeism, gifted program enrollment, high school graduation, college matriculation, and law enforcement and special education referrals. BiGI will admit each year a new rising 6th grade cohort and support them through 12th-grade to successfully graduate from high school and be accepted at the University of San Diego or anywhere they choose to go to university. BiGI scholars, their guardians, and their educators will learn how to plan their college and career pathways through summer and Saturday programs.

Detailed Description:This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2025.The Community & Leadership Development Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting The Nonprofit Institute and the Black InGenious Initiative within SOLES. This position requires an individual who is passionate about community engagement, leadership development, and equitable opportunities for diverse populations. The coordinator will be responsible for implementing strategies to support students’ and families’ experiences within the BiGI project. This role demands a proactive approach to community and program needs, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Training, coaching, and facilitation skills and a variety of contexts are essential for this position.Duties and Responsibilities:The Community & Leadership Development Coordinator will provide direct support to the Black InGenius Initiative (BiGI) and The Nonprofit Institute (NPI). Key responsibilities include:

  • Coaching & Training: Organize, design, and facilitate training sessions for BiGI and NPI. These training sessions should focus on equipping leaders with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to effectively lead and engage participants in a variety of program settings. These settings include but are not limited to: the BiGI Summer Academy, nonprofit organizations, community partnerships, K-12 and higher education academic settings, and leadership development programs.
  • Curriculum Development: This role involves the development and enhancement of educational content tailored to BiGI as well as training and education programs for NPI. The coordinator will be a part of a team that develops programs such as the BiGI Summer Academy, BiGI biweekly Saturday workshops, the Nonprofit Academy, and community cohort-based learning groups. The candidate must be proficient in curriculum design, emphasizing inclusion and innovation in addressing the needs of BiGI students and a wide array of organizations served by NPI. Responsibilities include creating neurodiversity-supportive and socially-just curricula, utilizing research-based practices, and supporting research and evaluation of programming. The role demands effective collaboration with both the BiGI team and NPI team to align curricula with a mission that attends to social justice advocacy in diverse settings.
  • Coordination and Data Reporting: Identifies, monitors, and builds relationships with on-campus and community partners to engage and collaborate BiGI and NPI. Act as a liaison between campus faculty, staff, and community stakeholders as assigned. In partnership with NPI leadership team, facilitate connections and networking opportunities within and beyond the university.
  • Community Engagement and Leadership Development: Designs and delivers leadership development events and community engagement strategies for BiGI and NPI. The coordinator works with both teams to facilitate training, provide coaching of participants, mentor student workers, support student success efforts, and remain current on effective practices in community-based leadership development and equity frameworks.
  • Feedback and Improvement: Works with NPI Director of Research to collect and analyze data from community and partners to continuously improve the effectiveness of programs.
  • Research and Grant Writing: Coordinator will support the research committee team within BiGI, meet regularly with the research team of NPI, and be a part of larger teams that identify and seek grant funding for both NPI and BiGI.

  • Equip leaders with skills, knowledge, and resources for effective program engagement
  • Participate in the development and implementation of coaching and leadership strategies
  • Act as a point for community partners inquiries and concerns, providing guidance and referrals as needed
  • Utilize research-based practices and support research and evaluation efforts
  • Support the research committee team within BiGI and collaborate with the NPI research team in program evaluation, qualitative research, action research, and grant writing
  • Engage in continuous professional development related to leadership, coaching, and research and grant writing
  • Ability to manage the demands of a joint appointment, including effective communication and planning skills

Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Leadership, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching, counseling, coaching, or a similar role in an educational setting
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, emotional intelligence, cultural competence, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Leadership, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
  • Experience working in higher education, nonprofits, or similar settings
  • Familiarity with student information systems and educational technology tools
  • Experience in community engagement and leadership development strategies
  • Experience working with students from backgrounds that are frequently disproportionately represented in rates of suspensions, chronic absenteeism, gifted program enrollment, high school graduation, college matriculation, and law enforcement and special education referrals
  • The ideal candidate will have personal experience overcoming barriers to education and professional experience utilizing evidence-based practices to support students from populations historically excluded from higher education.
  • The ideal candidate will also have lived experience and/or academic training that reflects the needs of first generation college students and other communities served by NPI.
  • Skills and/or capacity to develop competence in program evaluation, qualitative research, action research, and grant writing are preferred
