The Health Educator is responsible for managing, coordinating, evaluating, and providing oversight for the Klickitat County Public Health Department’s Health Promotion and Communication.The Health Educator also serves as a member of the department management team, and coordinates with the DirectorThe Health Educator must maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with the Public Health team, outside agencies, local stakeholders, and the general public; works under the guidance of State and Federal regulations, and County policies and procedures.Essential Job DutiesHEALTH DEPARTMENT HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM
Manage, develop, oversee, and organize the Health Promotion programs including but not limited to: * Participate in program level activities as required by the Director.

  • Provide input and guidance, and initiate/create departmental policies that relate specifically to Health Promotion and Communications
  • Assume responsibility for analyzing data as it relates to division programs; prepare reports; disseminate and/or present results in a manner appropriate to the recipient/audience.
  • Utilize effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with staff, Director, Health Officer, the department management team, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Represent the department in a variety of settings, such as program-specific local and state work sessions, boards and committees, public meetings, etc.
  • Provide hands-on program support.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships to ensure health promotion materials have broad input and carry a comprehensive public health message that is appropriate to the audience

OVERSEE THE DEPARTMENT’S PUBLIC INFORMATION ACTIVITIES * Serve as or supervise the Public Information Officer during emergency events and outbreaks.

  • Oversee the submission of media releases and public service announcements for the department.
  • Ensure maintenance of media contact lists and logs.
  • Oversee all requests for updates and changes to the department website, including social media accounts.
  • Assist with all health care provider communications.
  • Ensure department compliance with policies related to media communications and public information.
  • Coordinate public health awareness and promotion activities.
  • Maintain department brand and style guidelines
  • Managing social media platforms such as Facebook and county website and ensuring content remains consistent across all platforms and maintain departments presence in a positive manner
  • Develop and maintains press release templates and files for staff
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with area organizations, public agencies, healthcare/volunteer organizations, schools , etc. to ensure communication between KCHD and the community is seamless
  • Work with media to promote programs, prepare various reports, press releases and public service announcements to ensure dissemination of information in a timely manner.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for supervising student interns and volunteers within the Health Promotion programs.
  • Assis the Public Health Department as needed in the event of a Public Health Emergency (i.e., food borne illness outbreak, bioterrorism event, etc.).

Additional Job Duties:May train, prioritize, direct and review the work of lower classified employees or volunteers.Perform other related duties as assigned.Requirements/Minimum QualificationsRequirements/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education or a related field and at least three (3) years of previous work experience in public health or health promotion.
  • Must possess a valid driver license.
  • A criminal history and background check will be performed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience as a social media specialist or similar position. Excellent critical thinking, interpersonal, communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with intermediate/advanced computer skills including all Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher), and possess the ability to learn programs specific to the department and/or County quickly.
  • Ability to use social media for impressions and brand awareness
  • Familiarity with publishing and web design
  • Ability to coordinate staff and stakeholders with press releases, interviews and train staff in best practices for being interviewed, quoted, etc.
  • Effective public speaking and professional experience
  • Ability to work cohesively in a team atmosphere and lead people.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Skilled in communicating with tact and diplomacy to gain concurrence and cooperation with personnel and/or community agencies.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organization skills.
  • Ability to seek creative solutions and solve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to understand, develop, present and work within a budget.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population of clients, community-based agencies, and County personnel.
  • Ability to design and implement community-based health promotion programs.
  • Ability to market public health services effectively.
  • Skilled in planning and organizing work activities in order to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Ability to obtain NIMS training (100, 200, 700, 800) within one (1) year of hire.
  • Ability to maintain the principles of confidentiality

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (public health, community health, or closely allied field) required; OR Associate’s degree with at least 2 years of professional experience in public health, disease prevention and/or
  • Experience in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating community programs; and community organization.
  • Community Health Education Specialist (CHES) Certification.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated grant-writing ability and experience with grant management.
  • Knowledge of public health issues, characteristics, and trends affecting healthcare, social conditions, and population groups.
  • Extensive marketing skills and/or experience.
  • Familiarity with publishing and web design

Licenses, Certificates and Other RequirementsValid state driver’s license in state of residence
Specific positions may require specialized training or certification.

Expected salary: $67662.4 – 88275.2 per year
