Job description: Salary Range: $61,500 – $83,100 AnnuallyJob Summary:The City of Greeley is seeing a Sales Tax Auditor to join the Sales Tax team in the Department of Finance. This position is primarily responsible for auditing business accounting records to assure compliance with the City’s sales and use tax ordinance, and applicable provisions for collection, as well as conducting investigations of businesses to ensure appropriate licensing, education of taxpayers/tenants regarding sales tax and/or fee requirements, tax and fee return preparation schedules, collecting outstanding tax and fee revenues. The Sales Tax Auditor is also responsible for responding to inquiries from the public regarding ordinances and assisting them with how to interpret these ordinances. The successful candidate will bring a high level of skill in dealing with customers, including the ability to diffuse upset or irate people either in person or on the telephone.Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree gained through a four-year college/university academic program in accounting or a related field, or specialized technical training of equivalent length.
  • Valid and current driver’s license

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

PREFERRED:

  • Two (2) + years of auditing experience, with one (1) year of sales and use tax audit experience preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant designation is preferred
  • Spanish bi-lingual fluency preferred

  • Knowledge of accounting principles, processes, and best practices
  • Accounting skills, including the ability to perform computational math, follow established accounting and financial standards, be cognizant of and address details, accuracy, meeting deadlines, and maintaining confidentiality

Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities):

  • Represents the City in sales/use tax audits
  • Schedules, plans, and performs sales/use tax compliance audits; examines, taxpayer records at the places of business
  • Determines taxes, interest, and penalties owed; writes audit reports detailing and summarizing findings
  • Reviews audit work papers and represents the City at hearings and appeal proceedings as an expert witness in taxation
  • Audits business accounting records to assure compliance with the City’s sales and use tax ordinance, and applicable provisions for collection
  • Conducts investigations of businesses to ensure appropriate licensing, education of taxpayers/tenants regarding sales tax and/or fee requirements, tax and fee return preparation schedules, collecting outstanding tax and fee revenues
  • Responds to inquiries from the public regarding ordinances and assist them on how to interpret these ordinances
  • Represents the City in sales/use tax audits
  • Schedules, plans, and performs sales/use tax compliance audits; examine taxpayer records at the places of business
  • Determines taxes, interest, and penalties owed; write audit reports detailing and summarizing findings
  • Interacts with the public and city employees in an effective and considerate manner

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Minimal physical effort is typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects
  • Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal
  • Frequent contact with employees and the public – in person and on the telephone
  • Requires ability to perform multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions
  • Extended periods of time at a fixed workstation
  • Communication skills enough to convey information to the public via telephone and in person
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs.
  • Operate standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements
  • Vision enough to interpret computer screens and documents to assist the public and complete work assignments
  • Manual dexterity enough to accurately input, retrieve, and verify work assignments
